As unlucky as it sounds, back pain is a very common health problem worldwide and a major cause of disability - affecting performance at work and general well-being. It can be acute or chronic, however, it is not a disease but a constellation of symptoms. Back pain affects people of all ages, from children to the elderly, and is a very frequent reason for medical consultations and missed school, work, and fun in life! While there are ways to temporarily relieve back pain, the causes of lower back pain are rarely addressed. That’s where Physical Therapy and Myofascial Release come in! So if you’re experiencing back pain…
You’re LUCKY, because HELP is available …take these 5 steps:
⇨Step 1: Sleep better. A poor sleep position can aggravate back pain. Try lying on your side. Place a pillow between your knees to keep your spine in a neutral position and relieve strain on your back. If you sleep on your back, slide a pillow under your knees. Be sure to sleep on a comfortably firm mattress.
⇨Step 2: Good Posture. Poor posture can make back pain worse, especially if you sit for long periods. Don't slump over your keyboard. Sit upright, with your shoulders relaxed and your body supported against the back of your chair. Try putting a pillow or a rolled towel between your lower back and your seat. Keep your feet flat on the floor.
⇨Step 3: Release. With myofascial release, you can relieve your back pain. The ultimate method of release is done by a highly trained John Barnes Myofascial Release therapist (you’re in luck, all of us at Balance Within PT are!). In between your sessions with your expert PT, self treatment and exercises assigned by your PT will keep you feeling great and making progress to keep it from coming back.
⇨Step 4: Modify & Strengthen. Learn how to sit, stand, and move in a way that keeps your spine in proper alignment and alleviates strain on your back. Strengthen the core muscles that support your back. A strong core is one of the best ways to prevent more back pain in the future.
