This Holiday Season Give Your Body The Gift Of Proper Hydration

Water is essential for your health because it is needed by every system in your body! For example, it is important for waste removal, temperature regulation, and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients.

Water is your body’s main chemical component and makes up 60% of your weight. Each day we lose water as we breathe, sweat, and eliminate waste, so we must replenish it to keep our body working well.

Here are some guidelines to help you decide how much water is right for your body:

  • The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine have determined that adequate daily fluid intake for men is about 15.5 cups and for women is 11.5 cups.  These amounts include water, other beverages (including caffeinated beverages), and food. About 20% of our water usually comes from our food and fruits and vegetables are good sources of water.
  • Another guideline given by F.  Batmanghelidj, MD in his book Your Body’s Many Cries for Water is that the body needs a minimum of 6 to 8 (8 ounce) glasses of water each day.  This guideline pertains only to water, so in this case, alcohol, coffee, tea and other caffeine containing beverages don’t count.
  • Keep in mind that you may also need to modify your total fluid intake depending on your activity level, the weather, your health, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
